Competitive Outcomes in Product-Differentiated Oligopoly

چکیده

This paper analyzes the effect of market concentration and product differentiation on the observed outcomes of competition among oligopolists. The empirical framework is designed to examine whether competition is less intense in markets with equal levels of concentration, but more differentiation among the products offered. A two-stage estimation procedure is proposed to address the endogeneity problem inherent when comparing outcomes across different market structures. I estimate the competitive effects using data from a cross-section of oligopoly motel markets located along U.S. interstate highways. The results indicate that firms benefit substantially by offering differentiated products. The presence of any market competitor drives down prices, but the effect is much smaller when the competitor is a different product type. Differentiation is optimal product choice behavior because the resulting competition among firms is less tough when their products are differentiated.

Estimating the Effects of Tax Reform in Differentiated Product Oligopolistic Markets

Estimating the Effects of Tax Reform in Differentiated Product Oligopolistic Markets The incidence of taxation has been extensively discussed in the public finance literature, but mainly within a competitive market setting or within a homogenous good (Cournot type) oligopoly. In a differentiated product oligopoly the effect of taxation can be more complex as the rate of taxation may affect not ...

Advertising in Differentiated Markets: The Effect of Incomplete Coverage

This paper considers the role of promotional expenditures by firms in a differentiated product oligopoly model. Advertising is informative and has two types of effects on demand, accommodating effects, which increase total demand in the product class, and predatory effects, which serve only to redistribute consumers among brands in the product class. Depending on the relative importance of each...

Equilibrium Price Dispersion, Mergers and Synergies: An Experimental Investigation of Differentiated Product Competition

This paper reports an experiment conducted to examine market performance and mergers in an asymmetric differentiated product oligopoly. We find that static Nash predictions organize mean market outcomes reasonably well. Markets on average respond to horizontal mergers with price increases as predicted and marginal cost synergies exert the predicted the power-mitigating price effects. Nash predi...

Oligopoly and consistent conjectural variations

This article examines "consistent" conjectural variations in an oligopoly model with a homogeneous product. A conjectural variation is consistent if it is equivalent to the optimal response of the otherfirms at the equilibrium defined by that conjecture. When the number of firms is fixed, we find that competitive behavior is consistent when marginal costs are constant, but that when marginal co...

Advertising in a Competitive Product Line

In many markets, competing but differentiated firms offer a product line in order to target each product to a different type of customer. Under competition, firms, while trying to target different products to different segments, are also interested in "stealing" customers from the competitors and, in particular, customers from the most profitable segments. How should a profit-maximising firm al...
